(5/18) Emmitsburg town officials said during a town meeting Monday that they plan to meet with State Highway Administration officials to urge action at the Silo Hill Road and Md. Route 140 intersection, where four accidents have occurred in the last several weeks.

Commissioner Bill O’Neil pointed out that two more accidents have occurred at the intersection in the weeks since town officials discussed the intersection at a May 1 meeting.

‘‘They are going to have to do something about that light, even if it’s temporary, because someone is going to get killed,” Commissioner Clifford Sweeney said.

O’Neil said he was concerned about the state’s response that it would consider a traffic circle at the intersection.

‘‘But that intersection is wired for a light now,” O’Neil said. ‘‘Maybe we could just all send a letter and say it’s serious.”

Commission President Chris Staiger asked town manager David Haller to arrange an afternoon meeting with state officials regarding the intersection.

New camera system installed at Town Hall

An operator for a new camera system that will enable town meetings and planning and zoning meetings to be aired on local Cable Channel 99 attended the town meeting Monday to test out the equipment.

Mayor James Hoover said a Southgate community resident who operates similar equipment at his church had already volunteered to operate the equipment for the town.

The next town meeting, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, during which town officials will discuss the draft budget and determine a pay increase for town staff, will be the first which the public will be able to view on television.

Town meetings are scheduled to be re-aired on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. and Thursdays at noon, following meetings, Hoover said.

Bathroom bid awarded; board members appointed

During Monday’s town meeting, officials also voted to award a contract for the site work and installation of restrooms at Community Park to Andrew & Sons Excavating for $29,350.

The company’s bid was about half of another bidder’s estimate.

In addition, town officials unanimously voted to appoint Robert Rosensteel as a regular member of the town’s board of appeals.

Officials also voted in favor of appointing Patrick Boyle as alternate member to the board.

O’Neil abstained from that vote.
