The Adams County Arts Council's Imagination Station arts-learning center has announced its September art classes:

Hand-Building in Porcelain with an Introduction to the Potter's Wheel: In this class participants will learn to hand-build pottery pieces using porcelain clay, as well as work with the potter's wheel. Instructor Jack Handshaw will glaze and fire the pieces using lead-free glazes that are safe for use in the home. Class will be held at the instructor's Fairfield studio on Monday evenings, September 7 through 28, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

Drawing in Pen & Ink: After some discussion and experimentation using pens, papers and techniques, as well as some practice, participants will be able to produce pen and ink drawings of subjects they choose. This class will be taught by local artist Becky Brown and will meet on Tuesday evenings, September 8 through 29, from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M.

About Place: The Magical Device in the Writer's Toolbox: Through readings and written exercises in this workshop-style writing class, participants will examine how setting and place function in prose and verse. They will develop original writing where place is a prominent element, exploring how setting can define character, sharpen plot and shape voice. This class, taught by Kim Dana Kupperman, managing editor of The Gettysburg Review, will meet on Thursday evenings, September 10 through October 1, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

The Imagination Station will also offer the following short-term seminars this September:

Photographing Art & Product for Publication: This one-evening seminar is designed for those preparing to enter their artwork into a juried show â€" or even just sell items on eBay. It covers how to set up, light and photograph artwork or a product to show off its best side. Area photographer Bert Danielson will lead this class, which meets Wednesday, September 23, from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M.

Plein Air Workshop: Artists can explore the unique light and colors of early fall as they experience the joys and challenges of painting outdoors during this three-day seminar. Demonstrations and ample practice time will make for an exciting, educational workshop. Participants will begin by setting up their easels on Lincoln Square, Gettysburg; the next two days they'll be in different locations in the area. This class is suitable for those working with oils or pastels, and some art experience will be helpful. Artist Mark Brockman will lead this class, which meets Thursday through Saturday, September 24 through 26, from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. each day.

The Imagination Station is the arts-education center of the Adams County Arts Council, whose mission is to cultivate an arts-rich community. Unless otherwise noted, all classes will meet in the Imagination Station classroom, located at 18 Carlisle Street, Suite 201, in Gettysburg, directly across from the Majestic Theater. Parking is conveniently located behind the Majestic in the Race Horse Alley parking garage.
