(1/11) The Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra will feature the musical talent of the Sunderman Conservatory of Gettysburg College when they present a Music, Gettysburg! concert on Sunday, January 17, at 4:00 pm in the Chapel of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg.
The concert will feature pianist Jocelyn Swigger, Assistant Professor of Music at the Sunderman Conservatory, performing the famous Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, op. 58. This collaboration between the Chamber Orchestra, the Sunderman Conservatory and Music, Gettysburg! will also involve Dr. Alexander Kahn,
conductor of the Gettysburg College Orchestra, who will conduct Mozart’s "Overture to Don Giovanni." Two students from the Sunderman Conservatory will also join the GCO for this performance: flutist Paul McShee and violinist Ryan Kozak. Also to be performed on the program is Mozart’s ever popular Symphony No. 40, in g minor, K. 550, and the same
composer’s "Overture to Don Giovanni."
The piano soloist, Swigger, joined the Gettysburg College faculty in 2004 and currently serves as Coordinator of Keyboard Studies in the Sunderman Conservatory. She has a BM degree from Oberlin College and a DMA from the Eastman School of Music. She has performed as solo and collaborative pianist in the United States,
Europe, and South America. She spent the summer of 2008 in Asuncion, Paraguay, teaching piano and chamber music on a Fulbright Scholar Teaching Grant. Before her appointment at Gettysburg College, she taught at Fort Lewis College, the Hochstein Music School, CUNY Queensborough, and Adelphi University, and played as a collaborative artist and
accompanist for the Manhattan School of Music, the Boys Choir of Harlem, and the Juilliard School of Music in New York.
The Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra, founded by Carolyn and Norman Nunamaker, is currently in its 13th year of operation. It has as one of its objectives to present as many local musicians as possible both as soloists and as members. More than half of the members are from Adams County, and the GCO continues to include among
its guest performers many professional musicians from around the country who were born and raised in Gettysburg.
The Sunderman Conservatory of Music, a partner to Music, Gettysburg!, was established in 2005 after Dr. F. William Sunderman, a graduate of Gettysburg College from the Class of 1919 provided a major gift for the college. Sunderman died in 2003 at the age of 104, and was a world renowned pathologist, receiving the award of
being the "Pathologist of the Century." During WWII, he was Medical Director of the Manhattan Project. He was also known as an active violinist and promoter of chamber music. At 99 years of age, he performed at Carnegie Hall along with his son, F. William Jr., and other medical/musical notables. During the 1980’s, he contributed generously to
Gettysburg College in founding the Sunderman Chamber Music Series, an endowment that continues to serve the community by bringing outstanding musical organizations to the college campus.
