Members and supporters of the volunteer fire company were in attendance for a feast of oysters, country ham and turkey at the Lewiston Fire Company hall.

As is the custom, members and guests came together to celebrate the hard work of the volunteers and others who helped make the year a success.

Chief Chris Kinnaird named Sean Donovan Firefighter of the Year. Kinnaird said Donovan was one of the company's top responders, answering 172 of the company's 444 calls.

In addition, Donovan attended many hours of training.

He will be assigned as a full-time firefighter to the Brunswick Volunteer Fire Company soon, Kinnaird said.

Kinnaird awarded the Chief's Award to Tim Bentz.

Bentz's positive attitude, energy and support with fund-raising efforts earned him the award, Kinnaird said.

Charles Bentz was named the Unsung Hero during the evening. While celebrating 25 years of service to the company, he was given the award for his contributions, such as acting as a back-up driver and member of the board of trustees.

Kinnaird also noted that Bentz's two sons and his grandson are also members of Guardian Hose.

"Without dedicated members like [Bentz], the Guardian Hose Company would not be able to provide the best quality fire and rescue service to Thurmont and the community," Kinnaird said.

Two of the company's top responders included the chief and President Wayne Stackhouse, though as is the custom, little attention was given to that.

The company also recognized Thurmont government officials and town employees for their support to the company during the year.

Public Works employees Joe Fraley, Butch West, Dave Grimm and Brad Weddle were given special recognition for their assistance during calls.
