50s - 60s Day coming on July 26

(4/6) Rock and roll is here to stay. In Thurmont, it is celebrated once a year during the town’s annual 50’s/60’s Day at the carnival grounds.

This year’s party begins on Saturday, July 26 with activities running all day, but most beginning at 4 p.m.

“This year, because of the heat we’ve had in previous years, we decided to scale back some of the events and not start until 4 p.m.,” said Commissioner Wayne Hooper who has been helping put together the event.

The day kicks off with the Thurmont Farmers Market and community yard sale from 9 a.m. – noon. The classic car show begins at noon and runs to the end of the day’s events.

The evening activities include:

  • 4 – 5 p.m. – Kid’s contests
  • 5 – 5:30 p.m. – Dance exhibition by Elower-Sicilia Dance Studio
  • 5:30 – 6 p.m. – Door prizes and games
  • 6 – 10 p.m. – Music by Big Cam and the Lifters

“During their breaks, we’ll be giving away more door prizes and playing other games,” Hooper said.

The evening’s final raffle will be at 9:45 p.m. First prize is $500 in furniture from Wolfe’s Furniture, second prize is half a beef from Shriver’s Meats and third prize is $250. The prizes were donated by Bill’s Auto Body.

“And you don’t need to be present to win,” Hooper added.

50s/60s Day began in 2001 with Thurmont’s 250th anniversary celebration and has continued to grow.

“We get more than 1,000 people each year now,” Hooper said.
