Walkersville Burgess Chad Weddle acknowledged Nick for being a giving, devoted community member. "On behalf of the citizens of the community," Weddle said, "we express our sincere thanks for a life well-lived of Nader ‘Nick’ Hani and know that his memory and legacy and love for this community that we call Walkersville will continue through the actions of his family and his friends."

Several family and friends of Nick recalled fond memories throughout the memorial service. His oldest daughter, Natalie Hani, spoke on behalf of her mother and sisters, reflecting on her father’s loving, appreciative spirit. "For a man who doesn’t know how to use a phone, he sure does know how to take a lot of pictures," she said, sparking laughter from many attendees. She smiled while speaking of childhood memories, reminiscing on his kindness and lighthearted sense of humor.

The service continued with the sharing of more memories. Bonnie Leins, secretary of the Walkersville Historical Society, reminisced about the time she first met Nick Hani, while Hani’s youngest cousin, Theo Ayoub, reflected on his positive character. "You never had a bad day with Nick," Ayoub said. "He dedicated a lot to his community."

As the final speakers presented, attendees of the memorial service began lighting their candles, passing the glowing flame onto the next person. Pastor Don Dvorak returned to say a closing prayer, and a moment of silence allowed family, friends, and community members to reflect on Nick’s life and the purpose of their gathering that evening.

After the ceremony, attendees of the service were able to share memories with the family while enjoying light refreshments together. Several members of the Walkersville community donated baked goods, including cookies and brownies, as well as servings of apple cider. The Feed and Country Store was decorated with photos of Nick, Palestinian flags, and even a firepit to bring light and warmth when the sun set.

The turnout for Nick’s memorial and candlelight service showed just how influential and giving Nick was—as a father, husband, cousin, uncle, neighbor, and friend. The town of Walkersville truly outdid itself in celebrating the life of one of its most selfless community members.

The store announced his passing on August 9th, and Nick’s funeral took place at St. Peter & Paul Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church on Sunday, August 14th. On Monday, August 15th Nick was buried at All Souls Cemetery in Germantown. He was 57 years old.

Besides his children and many friends, Nick leaves behind a history of rescuing countless lost or abandoned cats who found safety and love in his arms. Their lives, like ours, where better because of him.
