Former Mayor Maurice Murray Dies

Mr. Maurice "Chip" Elwood Murray, 82, of 306 S. Second St., Woodsboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Washington Hospital Center.

He was the husband of Maxine Trout Murray. They were married for 60 years.

Born Nov. 24, 1920, in Brunswick, he was the son of the late Luther F. Murray Sr. and Vera Kline Murray Smith.

Mr. Murray graduated from Frederick High School in 1939.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, seeing action in Guam during World War II.

In 1950, he operated Murray's grocery store and in 1960 he worked for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement as postmaster of Woodsboro in 1984.

He was instrumental in obtaining the ground for the Woodsboro Community Park. Mr. Murray served as a commissioner for several terms and was mayor of Woodsboro for two terms.

He was an active member of Woodsboro Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving in many capacities. He was a charter member, former commander and life member of the Glenn W. Eyler American Legion Post of Woodsboro. He was one of the organizers of the Woodsboro Medical Center and served as president from 1997 to 1999.

Mr. Murray was a member of Elks Lodge 684 of Frederick, Acacia Lodge AF&AM of Thurmont, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Frederick Forest 132, the 40&8 Lodge 155 of Frederick, and Woodsboro Historical Society.

He was active at Glade Valley Golf Club, where he was made a life member and volunteered as a starter for several years.

He received the Woodsboro Sertoma Club "Service to Mankind" Award in 1982.

He enjoyed golf, tennis, playing cards and spending time with his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Pamela Broka and husband Sherman of Alexandria, Va., and Peggy Esworthy and husband Ed of Walkersville; two sons, Richard E. Murray and wife Michelle of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and William H. Murray and wife Diane of Crofton; nine grandchildren, Tripp Macdonald, Derek and Danielle Broka, Eddy and Sara Esworthy, Michael and Matthew Murray, Kayd and Mikie Moore.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Luther F. Murray Jr.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro, where the Glenn W. Eyler American Legion Post will conduct a memorial service at 8:45 p.m.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Woodsboro Evangelical Lutheran Church, Main Street, with the Rev. Dorothy Lundgren, his pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro.
