April 2007

There is an appointed time for everything.
And there is a time for every event under Heaven -
A time to give birth, a time to die;
A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted
                                               Ecclesiastes, 3:1-2

Weather watch: showers (1,2,3,4,5). Fair and cool (6,7,8,9) with a chance of snow or rain (10,11,12,13). Scattered showers 14,15,16) turning cooler; more showers (17,18,19,20). Fair weather with warmer temperatures (21,22,23) with possible showers (24,25,26,27). April ends with fair and mild weather (28,29,30).

Tornado watch: the almanac sees possible tornado activity between the 23rd and the 25th of April.

Full moon: April's full moon rises at 5:09am on the 2nd. Native Americans often referred to it as pink moon because of the many flowers and trees that turn pink and bloom during the month of April. It is also has been known as Fish moon because fishing started to pick up as the weather warms.

Special notes: April 22nd is earth day. Call the earth day network at 202.518.0044 or got to www.earthday.net for activities that will help to preserve our great planet. Take a moment to review last year's income tax return before filing. Compare it to your current return and look for any deductions you might have missed. If you filed early, check the status of your return at www.irs.gov.

Holidays: observe Easter on Sunday, April 8th. Plan a nice Easter dinner with family or friends but be sure to find time to worship at the church of your choice. Enjoy this time of rebirth and celebrate the coming of spring.

The garden: begin planting indoor seedlings outdoors. Harden them off first with several short days outside. Plant asparagus roots and onion sets now. Fertilize winter planted vegetables early in the month and after any danger of frost, begin planting warm season vegetables. Set out annuals, perennials, and other bedding plants in late april and remember to apply a balanced fertilizer. Plant shrubs, such as rhododendrons, viburnums, azaleas and spiraea for late spring color. Be on the look out for tent caterpillars and their webs and get rid of them before they spread. Keep an eye out for other pests such as slugs and snails, especially if spring is cool and wet. Get the lawn ready by treating it with pre-emergent crabgrass killer right after forsythia bloom.
