Landmarks
Foundation and Frederick Historical Society Collaborate on
Historic Building Records Project
The Frederick
County Landmarks Foundation and the Historical
Society of Frederick County announce the completion of
a three-year project to create a research database on historic
properties in Frederick County. Utilizing the records compiled
through Landmarks' Historic Plaque Program, staff and
volunteers of the Historical Society transferred information
into a computer database on the Historical Society Library's
information management system. The resulting database contains
records on nearly 350 historic properties in Frederick County.
The records include a physical description and historical
background on each property, as well as accompanying
documentation such as land records and photographs.
In recognition of the completion of this significant endeavor,
both organizations are hosting an open house and demonstration
at the Historical Society of Frederick County's Library at 24
E. Church Street in Frederick, on Saturday, October 25 at 1:00
p.m. The public is invited to stop by to see how this resource
will be used to support research on historic properties and
the people associated with them.
"This project provides an excellent example of the
positive results of collaboration and the sharing of
resources," said Historical Society Executive Director,
Mark Hudson. In addition to developing the database, the
Historical Society is serving as the repository for the
original records. According to the Historical Society's
Librarian, Marie Washburn, “The project allows us to
preserve and disseminate the important information contained
in these records." "It will provide us a useful
resource for assisting property owners, historians and
genealogists," she added.
The Landmarks Plaques Record database will available at the Historical Society of Frederick County Library. The Library is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information about this project or other resources for historical research, contact Marie Washburn at 301-663-1188.
