Blue Ridge Summit Free Library
 to celebrate 90th year

(7/10) On Saturday, July 21, 2012 the Blue Ridge Summit Free Library will celebrate 90 years of service to the community during the annual Ice Cream Social and Book Sale. The event will be held in the library and on the surrounding grounds and plaza area. Sabillasville Road in front of the library will be closed to traffic by the Blue Ridge Mt. Vol. Fire Police to support safety of our guests and additional exhibitor spaces. PenMar Development Corporation is the underwriting sponsor for this year's event.

More than 1,000 books will be offered for sale including selections for adults, teens and children. Used videos, DVD's and audio books will also be sold. Gift items, such as library t-shirts, tote bags, note cards and wood block replicas, will be available for purchase along with plants and other items. The Blue Ridge Summit Lions Club will sell brooms and the Blue Ridge Garden Club will display and sell flower arrangements. Food items for sale will include hot dogs, steamers, nachos, snacks, beverages, baked goods and funnel cakes. Ice cream will be provided by Antietam Dairy, which will donate a portion of sales to the library. The Blue Ridge Summit Post Office will be present and offering a special 90th Anniversary Postal Pictorial Cancellation Stamp.

Scheduled entertainment will be as follows: The Wayne Band 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.; Strawberry Hill Nature Show from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m.; Rich Fehle 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 to 1:00 pm. and Our Youth Have Talent 1:00 to 3:00 including, Hannah Richardson, Claire Martin, Kristi Barkdoll, Andy Barkdoll, Maggie Dennis and Noelani Galarza.

A free childrenıs program, Culler Magic featuring entertainer Frank Culler, will be presented from 11 to 11:40 a.m. Animal lovers may visit with Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve and Top Knot'ch Alpacas. Jack and Holly Olzewski, with Olzewski's Fossils and Minerals, oriented to kids and adults alike, will be set up with fossils, jewelry, sharks teeth, minerals and new surprises. The Friends of the Monterey Pass Battlefield will be present with exhibits and information about the land and building recently purchased for battlefield preservation, and development of an interpretive center.

At 12 noon, the annual Harvey Bridgers Award will be presented to a fifth or sixth grade student for exemplary use of the library and its services.

Fountaindale Volunteer Fire Company will offer free fire truck rides from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. Free seated massages will be given, courtesy of Synergy Therapeutic Massage Center and Training School.

Local artists Steve Burdette and Penny Durbin will be displaying and selling their art work along with Candi Whitsell, who will display and sell prints of artwork done by the late Landis Brent Whitsel. Carolyn Smith will be providing exotic face painting and local authors, Mary Alice Baumgardner, Bob O'Connor, C.W. and Rhonda Whitehair, Sally Sawyer, Maxine Beck and Marie Lanser-Beck, Jim Rada, Bryn Yoder and the Antietam Historical Society will provide book signings and sales of their publications.

Ice cream lovers can "Do Yourself a Flavor" and enter the Great Ice Cream Freeze Off Contest. Antietam Dairy, in cooperation with the library, is allowing participants of this contest to let their imaginations run wild. For a one dollar entry fee, participants may create their own flavor and ice cream name (on paper only, no cooking necessary). The winner, selected by Dairy owners Jake and Cathy Sweet, will receive a free half-gallon of their flavor creation, as well as public recognition at the ice cream shop when the winning flavor is sold to the public. Last year's winning flavor will also be sold at the Ice Cream Social.

Event parking is available in the plaza lot across from the library off Monterey Lane and in other adjacent lots. For more information call the library's manager, Nancy Bert, at 794-2240. Library hours are Monday - Thursday, 3 - 8 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The library is closed on Fridays and Sundays.
