Mount student dies after being hit by pickup

(4/29) A student from Mount Saint Mary’s University died Tuesday as a result of being struck by a vehicle.

Lt. Tom Winebrenner, with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, reported that the female student was struck around 3:16 p.m. while in the 16500 block of Old Emmitsburg Road.

Mount Saint Mary’s University President Thomas H. Powell identified the deceased student as Elizabeth DiNunzio, a senior and an education major.

Winebrenner stated that the student was apparently jogging when she was hit and killed by the vehicle.

County deputies and EMS personnel who were dispatched to the scene of the fatal accident found that the female victim had been struck by a pickup truck.

Winebrenner said the truck that struck the student was traveling north on Old Emmitsburg Road.

He said the student appeared to have been jogging southbound on the north shoulder when she was hit.

The deputy stated that the “impact caused a fatal injury to the jogger.”

University President Powell said in a message posted on the Mount’s web site, “It is with a very heavy heart that I notify you of the death of one of our students.”

“This is a moment of unimaginable sorrow for the entire Mount family. This loss affects us all,” Powell stated.

The university president said, “We are a strong, caring community, and in the days and weeks ahead, we will seek solace and a source of healing from our merciful Father and from one another. I ask that you reach out to each other with great compassion during this difficult time.”

A memorial Mass and Service was held Tuesday evening at 9:15 p.m. in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception.

Police did not release the identity of the driver who was operating the pickup truck and did not state if charges were being considered or were to be issued.
