(9/27) Lawrence A. ‘‘Tommy” Dorsey Jr. of Woodsboro has been named by the Community Foundation of Frederick County as one of three 2005 Wertheimer Fellows for Excellence in Volunteerism.
The three finalists were selected from 33 nominees.
‘‘The Wertheimer Fellows must be caring volunteer-citizens residing in Frederick County who give generously and unselfishly of their time, special talents, energy, and ‘sweat equity’ to improve the human condition,” according to a press release.
Each fellow received a $10,000 award to establish or add to a permanent fund at the Community Foundation for a charitable cause or nonprofit organization of their choice.
Dorsey’s Wertheimer fellowship will go to The Mount Hope Cemetery Maintenance Fund for the ongoing preservation of the cemetery.
Dorsey has volunteered in Frederick County for more than 30 years and has especially been involved with youth programs. He started a Youth and Government Program to provide more than 200 students with hands-on experience in learning more about how government and courts function. Dorsey served as
president of the Frederick County YMCA’s Board of Trustees.
Dorsey has also been involved with Rotary Club of Frederick, United Way of Frederick County, Mental Health Advisory Committee, Frederick Jaycees, Walkersville High School Alumni Association, Woodsboro Medical Center, Woodsboro Fire Company, Woodsboro Lutheran Church, Lutheran Brotherhood, Sunday
School Church, 4-H Camp Center’s Capital Fund Drive, Hospice, Woodsboro Historical Society, Homewood Retirement Center, Boy Scouts, and Mount Hope Cemetery.
The fellowships were created in 2003 to honor the memory of Janis Miller Wertheimer, a well-known Frederick County resident whose generosity and volunteerism were legendary. Wertheimer bequeathed the greater portion of her estate to the Community Foundation for the creation of two permanent
funds. The Wertheimer Fellows for Excellence in Volunteerism are made possible through the generosity of one of those funds, The Janis Miller Wertheimer Endowment Fund.
Dorsey and the other two fellows will be officially honored as the 2005 Wertheimer Fellows for Excellence in Volunteerism with a plaque presentation at the Community Foundation’s 19th Annual Report to the Community. The event starts at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 16, at the Frederick Holiday Inn Holidome
and Conference Center near the Francis Scott Key Mall. Video vignettes on the three Wertheimer Fellows will also be shown at that time, courtesy of NBC 25. For more information, call 301-695-7660 or visit www.cffredco.org.
