Mr. Charles
Edward Wivell Sr., 76, of East Water
Street, Smithsburg, Md., died Tuesday,
August 22, 2006, at his home.
Born March 5, 1930, in Emmitsburg, Md.,
he was the son of the late Roy J. Wivell
Sr. and Helen L. (Guise) Wivell.
He was a 1948 graduate of the Emmitsburg
High School, where he served as class
president during his junior and senior
year. He attended the Columbia Business
College in Hagerstown, Md., for one year.
He was employed by Home Beneficial Life
Insurance Company for 37 years, retiring
in 1992.
He was a veteran of the Korea War,
serving in the United States Marine
Corps. He received the Service Medal with
two battle stars, the United States
Service Medal, the National Defense
Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was a member of the St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Hagerstown and was an
usher at 8 a.m. Sunday Mass. He was past
president of the St. Mary's Holy Name
Society, served two terms on St. Mary's
Parish Council, St. Mary's CCD vice
president and St. Mary's Eucharist
minister at the Washington County
Hospital, where he also volunteered. He
was also active in the Smithsburg
Historical Society, Emmitsburg High
School Alumni Association, Save Historic
Antietam Foundation of Sharpsburg, Marine
Corps League -- Bull Dog Detachment,
V.F.W. Post 1936, American Legion Post 42
and Amvets Post 10. He was also past
president, secretary and treasurer of the
Smithsburg Little Sluggers Baseball
Charter, which he helped to organize.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52
years, Mary I. (Orndorff) Wivell; they
were married May 1, 1954. He is also
survived by six children, C. Edward
Wivell Jr. of Smithsburg, Timothy Wivell
of Warfordsburg, Pa., Susan (Wivell)
McFerren of Waynesboro, Pa., Kenneth
Wivell of Smithsburg, Andrew Wivell of
Smithsburg and William Wivell of
Smithsburg; seven grandchildren; three
step-grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; eleven brothers,
James Wivell of Rocky Ridge, Md., Joseph
Wivell of Emmitsburg, Henry Wivell of
Spring Grove, Pa., Bernard Wivell of
Rocky Ridge, Donald Wivell of Covington,
Md., Thomas Wivell of Columbia, Md., Paul
Wivell of Seven Valleys, Pa., David
Wivell of Emmitsburg, Richard Wivell of
Fairfield, Pa., Samuel Wivell of
Taneytown, Md., and Roy Wivell Jr. of
Emmitsburg; and five sisters, Margaret
Fullam of Taneytown, Md., Helen Reaver
and Therese Topper of Emmitsburg,
Genevieve Little of Mercersburg, Pa., and
Joan Matthews of Frederick, Md.
He was preceded in death by two brothers,
Robert Wivell and Roy Wivell, and one
sister, Patricia Hoff.
Services will be held Friday, August 25,
2006, at 10 a.m., from the St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Hagerstown, with
Father George Limmer and Father Kevin
Mueller officiating. Burial will be in
the Mount Saint Mary's Cemetery in
Emmitsburg, Md. The family will receive
friends Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9
p.m. at the J. L. Davis Funeral Home in
Smithsburg.
