Mr. William "Bill" A. Garner, 90, of Emmitsburg, Maryland, passed away Friday, July 15, 2011 at St. Catherine's Nursing Center at St. Joseph's Ministries in Emmitsburg. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Elizabeth "Betty" Fitzgerald Garner.
Born May 22, 1921 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late William Alexander, Sr., and Emily Agnes Taylor Garner. Mr. Garner was a member of St. Anthony's Shrine, VFW Post 6658, American Legion Post 121 and National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and retired from the U.S.
Department of State in 1983. Bill was an alumnus of Mount St. Mary's University. He loved traveling in his Airstream trailer, was an active member of several RV clubs and led caravans to the international rallies at Boise, Idaho, and Huntsville, Alabama and the Marvelous Maryland caravan.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Leah Ann Garner, James Taylor Garner, Cynthia Ann Garner Haley and husband Leo and William Alexander Garner, Jr., and wife Joyce and grandchildren Sharon, Krista, Rebecca, Frank, Taylor and John. He was preceded in death by his brother John Taylor Garner and sister Ann Garner Gregg.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 21, 2011 at St. Anthony's Shrine, 16150 St. Anthony Road, Emmitsburg. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made, in Bill's name, to the Agnes Taylor Garner Scholarship, c/o Mount St. Mary's University, Office of Development, 16300 Old Emmitsburg Road,
Emmitsburg, MD 21727.
