RESOLUTION FOR THE PURPOSE OF
CELEBRATING THE SESQUICENTENNIAL
OF THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG
AND THE ROLE OF EMMITSBURG
RELATIVE TO THE CONFLICT
******************************************************************
BE IT RESOLVED, ENACTED AND ORDAINED, this
_________ day of _________ 2013, by the Mayor and Board
of Commissioners of the Town of Emmitsburg, Maryland,
pursuant to the authority granted to them by the laws of
Maryland and the Charter of the town of Emmitsburg, do
hereby commemorate the role of the Town of Emmitsburg
and its citizens in the events surrounding the Battle of
Gettysburg.
WHEREAS, the year 2013 constitutes the 150th
anniversary, also known as the Sesquicentennial, of the
Battle of Gettysburg; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Emmitsburg was situated on a
major route to Gettysburg for both Union troops, who
encamped here prior to heading north to Gettysburg; and
Confederate troops, who traveled through Emmitsburg both
en route to, and during the retreat from, Gettysburg;
and
WHEREAS, members of the Emmitsburg citizenry
served in the military, and the Daughters of Charity
provided crucial nursing skills to the wounded at
Gettysburg and in hospitals dispersed throughout the
areas of conflict;
WHEREAS, the Town of Emmitsburg is proud of its
history and seeks to promote knowledge and understanding
of the town’s part in one of the decisive battles of the
Civil War;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY enacted this _______
day of ___________ 2013, by the Mayor and Board of
Commissioners, that the Town of Emmitsburg proudly
declares 2013 as a year of commemoration of the
Sesquicentennial of the Battle of Gettysburg and the
events that took place in and around Emmitsburg as
this most famous battle unfolded.
